Controlled Substance Policy
Controlled Substance Policy & Prescribing Guidelines
Effective Date: June 10, 2026
The clinical management of sleep disorders—including narcolepsy, idiopathic hypersomnia, obstructive sleep apnea-related hypersomnolence, and severe chronic insomnia—may occasionally involve the utilization of medications classified as controlled substances under federal and state law (e.g., wakefulness-promoting agents, stimulants, or sedative-hypnotics). To maximize clinical safety and comply fully with the Utah Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Kairos Sleep Clinic enforces strict prescribing boundaries.
1. Clinical Compliance and Medically Directed Adherence
- Medications must be taken exactly as prescribed by your provider. You agree not to increase, decrease, or abruptly discontinue dosages without first consulting your clinician.
- Unauthorized changes to your dosing schedule or using medications in a manner inconsistent with its direct labeling may result in the immediate tapering and administrative discharge from the practice.
2. Strict Refill and Schedule Policies
- Refills for controlled substances are legally restricted and require close monitoring. Requests for refills must be submitted during standard business hours, allowing a minimum of three (3) business days for processing.
- Prescriptions will not be refilled or replaced early, nor will controlled substance requests be addressed after hours, on weekends, or during holidays.
- Lost, stolen, destroyed, or misplaced prescriptions or physical medications will not be replaced or refilled ahead of schedule under any circumstances.
- Refills are strictly contingent upon keeping your scheduled appointments. If you cancel, miss, or reschedule a required follow-up visit, your medication refills will be withheld until a clinical evaluation is completed.
3. Dedicated Sourcing and Single-Provider Mutual Agreement
- You agree to obtain controlled medications managing your sleep disorder exclusively from providers at Kairos Sleep Clinic.
- You are required to fully disclose all other active prescriptions, medications, and substances you are consuming. You authorize our providers to routinely query the Utah Controlled Substance Database (CSD) to audit your active prescription profiles.
- Obtaining concurrent controlled prescriptions of the same therapeutic class from outside medical providers without explicit coordination will result in immediate termination of care.
4. Mandatory Follow-Up and Telehealth Evaluations
- Patients prescribed controlled substances must be evaluated routinely. Follow-up frequencies are determined by clinical stability but will occur at least once every 90 to 180 days as mandated by clinic protocols.
- Per Utah state regulations governing virtual controlled substance management, you must maintain active clinical contact and comply with any required objective safety screenings requested by your clinical team.
